When is sciatica an emergency?

Some symptoms need urgent medical care, not chiropractic treatment. Go to A&E or call 999 straight away if you have numbness around the genitals, buttocks or inner thighs (the 'saddle' area), new difficulty passing urine or controlling your bladder or bowels, changes in sexual function, or severe or worsening weakness in your legs. These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is leg pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve or its roots. It is often linked to a disc bulge, an overloaded structure pressing on the nerve, or pain referred from the lower back, and can feel like burning, shooting pain, pins and needles, or weakness down the leg.

It varies with the cause and how long you've had symptoms. Some people notice change within a few sessions and others take longer. Your assessment will give you a realistic view, and we'll refer you on if progress isn't as expected.
Do I need a scan first?
Not always. Sciatica is often assessed clinically without a scan. If your assessment suggests you need imaging or a GP or specialist review, we'll explain why and refer you.
